This also happens when I run it from the command line, after I type 'isready'. (In reaction to 'usi' it correctly prints its options, and 'usiok'.) So it seems the binary is simply broken.
Do you have the latest Microsoft Network.Net Framework installed on your computer?

For Windows XP: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... aspx?id=19
For the latest Windows: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=17718
I tried to do that, but got a message saying it was not supported for 64 bit windows computer.

I contacted the authors, and this at least solved my problem: there is an environment variable OSL_HOME that needs to be set to the installation folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\gpsshogi). The installer does this, but it does not get noticed until you reboot (which I never do on my laptop, because it takes forever...). The other PC had once suffered a disk crash, which lost the system settings when I re-installed the system. (But GPS Shogi was on another partition, so I never re-installed that.)

Now that I redefined the OSL_HOME variable and rebooted the PC, the old GPS Shogi works again. On my laptop I just moved the GPS Shogi files of the letest version I just downloaded to what is apparently the default path name (to avoid rebooting). This makes GPS Shogi start, but when I try to make it play it just forfeits on time without moving. I guess it needs more memory than is available on my laptop; it does not seem to have a hash-size option.

I don't understand Larry's problem. Normally 32-bit executables should have no problem running on a 64-bit system.

Mr. Kaufman you can always send the GPS-Shogi development member an email to help you install GP-Shogi correctly.

Mr. Kaufman you can send an email to the GPS-Shogi Development Team, asking them to help you install GPS_Shogi correctly on your particular system:

I had the problem that you describe with the same errors, this problem was also fixed by rebooting the computer (it's just an environment variable that is set wrongly just after the install)

I believe that Larry wants to use the 64-bit version of GPS-Shogi with insufficient Memory installed.

I did not even know there exists a 64-bit version. The only Windows version I found on the GPS Shogi download page was a 32-bit installer.

Sorry I meant to say gpsusi with Shogidokoro on Windows 7 64 bits. I wonder if Larry selected the gpsshogi instead of the correct one gpsusi and also if Larry tried to restart the computer after the installation?

PS: Fujitsu is using a system twice faster and with an improved Bonkras engine, in which if the current champion is only a few Elo or Rank higher then the Ex Champion Yonenaga regardless of his age, it would be wise to assume that Bonkras is playing at the level of the Champion if NOTvery close.
Which live Shogi Championship are you looking for? Takodori's Entrance to Shogi World has a link to the game Bonkras played with Yonenaga on January 14, 2012. The link is at Bonkras beat Yonenaga in 113 moves, http://shogi.typepad.jp/eweblog/2012/01 ... moves.html
The current champion is not a few Elo and not few Rank higher then the Ex Champion Yonenaga. The Ex Champion Yonenaga is not even a professional (grandmaster) player. To make this clear, compare the current fide champion Anand to the 1993 fide champion Karpov. I am not trying to knock down Karpov. But Karpov at 60 has not been active for years. I think if Karpov were active today, he would not be rated a GM today. Either way Karpov today is not in the same league as Anand. The same with 1993 Meijin Yonenaga. If Yonenaga were playing today, he would not be rated professional (grandmaster) player. Yonenaga today is not in the same league as Moriuchi, the current Meijin.[/quote

How much higher do you guess Yonenaga Kunio is over amateurs Kosaku and Shinoda? I believe that Yonenaga is still considered higher than Shimizu, Kosaku and Shinoda. If you are interested in this topic, please check the following page from time to time which Yonenaga maintains by himself.

Restarting the computer helped somewhat, in that now I can start a game and the computer will respond from its book. But once I leave book, it just hangs up. I thought I selected gpsusi but it doesn't say that, so perhaps I'll try that again.

It seems that although I select the "usi" engine to install, it reports that I have installed the incorrect gps engine. So this is probably the problem. What is the solution?

What version and date of your GPSShogi you installed?
