Chess Genius 3 with extended memory under x64!

Post by MikeB »

and it's stable - runs perfectly under Virtual PC 2007, free software from Microsoft. Virtual PC allows one to have the exact same feel for the chess programs one did under did DOS. Plus, you it runs unde a window - with perfect mouse and clock timing. Amazing.

One Major Caveat -> installing DOS 6.22 is not for the faint of heart for those who no longer have DOS 6.22 disks. But it can be done. The secret is using the DOS 6.22 StepUp files from the MSDN site and hitting no and F3 a couple of times during the installation. Read the section on using MakeSys when MakeSys cannot create the IO.SYS or MSDOS.SYS file - in essence Microsoft provides the "how to" when you do not have the original MS-DOS 6.2x disks.

MS-DOS 6.22 Step-Up (BBS) README.NOW File

with 32M extended memory in an x64 window!

mate in 11 found in 20 seconds - ( would take several minutes on older pc's)

clarification

Virtual PC allows one to have the exact same feel for the chess programs one did under did DOS (FULL SCREEN MODE). OR it runs unde a window - with perfect mouse and clock timing. In either case, you can set it up to run with extended memory. Previously , in any setup, extended ( or linear memory ) was only available in full screen mode and usually booted it from a floppy disk. "cg3 /x" the slash x put CG in extended memory mode up tp 32M hash ( which ws huge when it came first out). Using extended nemory (/x flag) and using himem.sys in config.sys sre not compatible.

I don't think installing DOS under Virtual PC is the best way to go about running old DOS programs. Just download DosBox and a frontend like D.O.G. and you'll find that Genius 3 runs perfectly well with only a modicum of effort. Certainly a lot less than with Virtual PC.

I know, because I did it yesterday. :)
