Here is a position, where computers make an inferior choice.

Post by Dann Corbit »

From this position:
[D]r1b2rk1/pp1nqpp1/2p4p/4p3/2BP4/2R1PN2/PP3PPP/3Q1RK1 w - - id "NNSSL.021"; pm Qc2 d5; c0 "Actually, Qc2 is doubtful.";

Both Hiarcs and Rybka seemed to like the choice Qc2. It does not seem to play out very well. It scores 37% and there are no wins for white after Qc2 in the very strong opponent database. There are not a lot of games between top opposition for this position, so perhaps it is just an anomaly.

Code: Select all

{
In this position, white fares poorly.
[D]r1b2rk1/pp1nqpp1/2p4p/4p3/2BP4/2R1PN2/PPQ2PPP/5RK1 b KQkq - 0 1

This should be a book move, not a chess engine evaluation position.

Horizon's opening book has [move(probability)]: Bb3 (50%) and Qb1(50%). I have decided to delete Qb1 from the book, making Bb3 the only move.

The ChessBase book from ChessTiger 14.0 has [move(probability)]: Bb3(68.5%), dxe5(24%) and h3(7.4%). The CheesBase book shows the following win percentages: Bb3(58%) dxe5(50%) h3(50%)

Qc2 seems to lock the rook out at c3 leaving no retreat. In the long run, it just not seem to be a good GM move. In the short term I can see the pluses from an engine's point of view, a Q & R double on a file along with grabbing the c2-h7 diagonal. For me, no Qc2.

Black(Fedir Savchur) played 10...b6 maybe because rybka suggest that move(maybe the error was earlier and I do not know).

Note that Wolferm writes in the following link:

"Allthough the game is just 11 moves, White is winning anyway, I think."
