32 to 64 bit question
I'd like to get my computer to run 64 bit chess programs.(after seeing the latest rating list) I have a 4200+amd athlon 64x2. I'm not real computer savvy and was thinking I could run them on my computer out of the box. I have windows xp. Would like it if someone would steer me in the right direction on what I need to do. Also will it affect the 32 bit programs that are on my computer now? My Best, Rick Andrews

Re: 32 to 64 bit question
Not ignoring you- just dont know how to answer except to say i believe all the 32 bit uci engines will load and play in the 64 bit system, except that no native CB engines will. And i could even be wrong about this. My 64 bit knowledge is lacking, to say the least.

Re: 32 to 64 bit question
Hi,
on a 64 bits Windows (either XP or Vista), 32 bits programs will run fine as well as 64 bits programs.
As a UCI engine is an executable which runs in its own process, there is no problem to drive a 64 bits uci engine from a 32 bits User interface.
What cannot be done is to mix 32 bits and 64 bits binaries in the same process : so as Chessbase's user interfaces are 32 bits, you would not be able to run a 64 bits native engine (which are DLLs) inside these interface, but I don't know if such engines exist.
There is no problem to run a 32 bits native engine inside a 32 bits user interface.
Best regards,
Alain

You also need a 64bit windows to get the benefit of 64bit programs.

I guess I'll need to upgrade my windows. When I go to load 64 bit programs I get error messages. Wasn't there a site where I could download some drivers that would make 64 bit programs work with what I have? Thanks , Rick Andrews

I think there is no way to upgrate windows32 to windows64.
You need to do a new install.
