40 20 tourney on fried liver and Giuoco Piano

Post by cooldalek »

I am currently running a tourney at 40 20 time controls with 2 test positions that I often find myself playing (just to generate some interesting games to analyse/play through)

1. fried liver (1. e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bc4 Nf6, 4. Ng5 d5 5.exd5 and now where black Plays the poor move 5. ....Nxd5 which lots of my opponents play followed by 6.d4 and then the engines are unleashed)

The fact I am forcing black into an inferior starting position is entirely intentional because I often get this small advantage in games I play at my level. I will add a further test position with Black's correct response of 5. ... Na5 idc)

2. Giuoco Piano (1. e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bc4 Bc5, 4. c3 Nf6, 5. d3 d6, 6. 0-0 and then the engines are unleashed)

All engines are playing both positions as both black and white (i.e. 4 cycles)

Engines are: Fruit 2.2.1, Shredder 10.1, HIARCS 11.1, Spike 1.2, Pro Deo 1.2, Ruffian 1.0.5, Junior 9 (will be adding Fritz 10 and maybe Rybka 2.3.2 idc)

Single-CPU (32 bit) Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 1 Gig Ram (Hash tables set to 256MB) (5man and some 6 man tablebases) time control 40 20

It's taking ages to run as you'd expect so I'm running it as a series of mini tournaments of 3 engines at a time and then collecting results in one pgn/cbh file (12 games takes around 24 hours)

Happy to share either results or pgns of either completed tourney or games to date to anyone interested

Should have added that HIARCS 11.1 is forced to play with hypermodern turned off.

Really irritatingly I can't seem to find a way to make hypermodern off the default. A pain to have to keep changing it manually each time

Hi Larry, Sounds like a good idea. Have a question. (probably a no brainer for most members here) I'd like to do the same thing. How do you get the tournament to always play the same opening??

If you're using a Chessbase GUI, save the opening line into a "work" database.
Then when you set up your tournament, you select that work database for your openings.

If you use Arena 1.1 you can give it a starting board position (but this is broken in the later versions of Arena).

It's not fully broken: you can use a pgn in 1.99 beta 4. Just as long as the pgn doesn't contain fen strings.

Tournament.../options/Starting position.
