fruit code

After almost two years now, is there a good analysis how much did the code of Fruit help other programmers to improve their own engines? How big was the impact of the Fruit code?

I would say Huge.

Including the top notch engines.

Keep in mind that back in those days Fruit 2.1 was one of the the strongest chess engines out there so probably everyone has peeked at it's code and learned something from it (admittedly or not).

I have made some calculation a few month ago: it seems that the improvement was about 60 to 80 elo on the various lists. Hiarcs, Loop have made the most tremendous jump, if I remember well. Since 1985, a huge amount of new free engines of high quality appeared.
