Rybka is pretty fast here. Other programs I have tried like 15...Bxc3? (which they often believe gives Black an advantage) and stick with it for a very long time. However White is much better, maybe even winning, after 15...Bxc3?

Re: Another hard test position
Robin as far as I can see this is Rybka Beta's main line if Black plays 15. ...Bxc3, or 1. ... Bxc3 starting from the diagram position:
1...Bxc3 2.bxc3 Qe3+ 3.Kb2 Qxf3 4.Bd3 Qh5 5.Qe7 e5 6.Qxe5
[d]r1b2rk1/5ppp/p7/1p2Q1Pq/4P2P/2PB4/PKP5/3R3R b - -
Now Rybka has a good eval for White and the position looks optically good also but would it be possible to stop most of the attack by exchanging Queens as Toga is suggesting? Or could White avoid an exchange?
Is Rybka the only engine that sees a possibly dangerous attack by White here with both pawnpush e4-e5 possible or the h and g-pawns backed by Rooks threatening Black's King position? Can Black organize some counterplay or are the other engines out of their reckoning?

Re: Another hard test position
Follow up testposition, Rybka playing White avoids exchanging Queens but is still Rybka the only one seeing a possibly dangerous attack? What surprises me the most that it is usually not Rybka being very bothered with one of the Kings under attack. What makes this position, starting with Robin's position, different?

Re: Another hard test position
White can and should avoid the exchange of queens. The reason White's position is so strong in the line you give, which most engines want to follow, is that Black's queen ends up doing the menial job of blockading White's h-pawn. It can jump out briefly to threaten the queen exchange, but has to hop right back to h5 if White avoids the trade. Blockading a pawn is a terrible waste of a queens power and this frees White to press his advantage in other ways. I don't know why Rybka is so much faster seeing this than other engines.Eelco de Groot wrote:Robin as far as I can see this is Rybka Beta's main line if Black plays 15. ...Bxc3, or 1. ... Now Rybka has a good eval for White and the position looks optically good also but would it be possible to stop most of the attack by exchanging Queens as Toga is suggesting? Or could White avoid an exchange?

Re: Another hard test position
Thanks very much for your explanations Robin! I hope I understand your test positions a little bit better now and maybe some programmers can also benefit from your good analysis. I think they also show that Rybka can be tactically strong as well as positionally, in maybe especially the late middlegames.smirobth wrote:White can and should avoid the exchange of queens. If I had to make some guess, Rybka seems to know in this position more about the "overloading" of pieces, to borrow a term from Nimzovich. What I mean is, a program could think Black can counterattack with the pawns on a6 and b5, the White King seems exposed, but Black does not have enough firepower to support the pawns with the Rook on a8 and f8 and Bf6 needed to defend the own King position, and the Queen as you explained doing nearly nothing but stopping one of the pawns but unable to take it. White controls the center with several pieces and an important pawn e4, it would be different if Black still also had a defendable pawn on e5. White does not want to trade down Queens and Rybka seems to understand that much better. Bruce Moreland once wrote that calculating mobility for Queens is usually not worth the effort because the Queen is so good at getting to every square on the board if needed, I believe he did not implement it in Ferret, but here it might have made a difference if you could figure out soon enough, by calculating the "effective mobility" or something else in that vein, that Black's Queen is not doing much there on h5 and would have been better off defending pawn e5 while it still could (in the starting position).
I think it would be interesting to watch what other programs make of this!
Regards, Eelco

Re: Another hard test position
Analysis of the position taken a bit deeper, especially Shredder with little hash sees better now White's advantage;
Eelco de Groot wrote:Follow up testposition, Rybka playing White avoids exchanging Queens but is still Rybka the only one seeing a possibly dangerous attack? What surprises me the most that it is usually not Rybka being very bothered with one of the Kings under attack. What makes this position, starting with Robin's position, different?

Does Rybka have a different King Safety evaluation for the White King? Asymmetric from Black's King who is really under attack here? Or is it really a simpler King Safety in Rybka's case and other positional factors contribute therefore more to the +0.99? Any guesses, do I judge the position wrong?
