prices of dedicated chess computers and market

Post by mclane »

for dedicated chess computers.

as it seems after ALL those years with PCs and SOFTware the people go completely nuts to get a good and rare dedicated chess computer!

especially fidelity could, if they come back and sell their old plastic and wood chess computers, get an excellent deal if they would continue
their business. i wonder why the computer chess companies do not see and understand this.

the cheap and weak plastic machines, they very rarely bring much money.
but a unique and clever machine can make it.

what is going on. it seems the renaissance of computerchess (dedicated machines) is there.

and the computer chess companies such as Saitek and Novag completely ignore this.

i wonder why nobody is buying the rights from the old programmers and rebuilds the machines.

i wish it were so Thorsten

perhaps someone needs to contact these companies and show them the prices that are achieved on Ebay EVERY DAY
chess computers are sold each day many of them for several hundred euros if not even more

i am told by people who sell chess computers for a living that the newly released wooden Novag Citrine is selling VERY well
so perhaps this can be a beginning again??

Hopeful But Doubtful Regards

As much a fan of Kittinger and Novag as I am, they really need some proper competition. By that I don't mean any of the other comtemporary companies. I can't even remember the last time that Saitek even introduced a new program of even remotely decent playing strength (perhaps 4 years ago at least?). And Excalibur just doesn't take chess seriously enough to be taken seriously by dedicated chess fans.

It's a One Horse Race Regards

either they have a unique program, or a unique hardware.

nobody is interested in - lets say - dedicated machines like mephisto europe.
without display. without good hardware, without good playing strength or good features.

yes. you are absolutely right. IF the program is interesting. often it is not important how STRONG the program is, but HOW it plays.

Mephisto III e.g. was unique because it made only a few NPS.

the kaplan programs Maestro D+ and D++ were unique because of the interesting playing strength.
although only 8 bit.

even some smaller novag dedicated units were IMO very interesting because of their playing style such as Novag Supremo , Elite Premiere, Sci Sys MarkV was IMO interesting, the Intelligent Chess wooden machine, the Sphinx 68000 machines were interesting ALTHOUGH they did not play strong, but they were interesting because they were different. superconny of course.

one exciting thing about the D+
here the link with the D+ and D++ article
http://www.thorstenczub.de/dplus.html

was e.g. that kaplan implemented kind of
hash for the 8bit machines. it seems he saved important information from the searches before. that is IMO for an 8bit computer very astonishing.
