Opening book for Glaurung 2

Post by Tord Romstad »

An opening book for Glaurung 2 - ε/n (for n = 1,2,...), generously contributed by Salvo Spitaleri, is now available from my web site. Glaurung played with this book in the last six rounds of the Open Polish Computer Chess Championship (in the first three rounds, and in the game against GM Bartlomiej Macieja, it played with a somewhat less optimized book, also made by Salvo).

A big thanks to Salvo for this book! :D

Hello,

It's a pity that openingbook for Glaurung2 does not work with the last version. Is a book in preparation for the 2.5?

Huh? It certainly works with Glaurung 2 - ε/n, for all n >= 1. If you can't get the book to work with 2 - ε/n, there is something wrong with your setup. Are you sure the book file is named book.bin, and is placed in the same directory as your Glaurung binary? Are you sure the "OwnBook" UCI parameter has the correct value "true"?

The book does of course not work with the old Glaurung 1.x, but Glaurung 1.x has had its own opening book since a very long time already.

No: If there will ever be a version 2.5, it is at least one or two years away. I hope to have version 2.0 ready before the end of 2007, though. :)

Sorry. You are right, the parameter “ownbook” was deactivated. It runs now !
I have reduced the name of your last version (Glaurung 2-epsilon/5), because I found the name a little too long, and I call it 2.5. :D

Thanks for this excellent engine !

Problem with ponder on in Chessbase GUIs

Post by ebus »

Hi Tord,
when I use the new book with Glaurung 2 Epsilon5 in a Chessbase GUI with ponder on then Glaurung leaves the book after one move.

Hi Dieter

Which version of Fritz GUI do you use ?

Such problems were known with older GUI9 versions.

Hi Marc,
in my GUI10 there is no problem with Glaurung and the book.
The problem with Glaurung occurs in an old GUI8 (Jan 10 2005) and an old GUI9 (Dec 20 2005). I still use this old versions of the GUIs because in later versions of GUI8 and GUI9 I had severe problems with UCI engines (when I played myself against an engine with ponder on it often occured that my oppenent started to think after several seconds of delay. Therefore I downgraded my GUIs. Maybe that these problems are solved in the latest versions of GUI8 and GUI9. Chessbase updates are still black box. I hate to test them and I 'll never understand why there is no documentation.

Hello,
in the meanwhile I tried once more the latest GUI8 and GUI9 versions and they work fine with Glaurung and Salvo's book.
