Problems with cb9 and vista

Post by Rory »

Hello all,
I am having difficulty getting chessbase 9 working in Vista (home premium). Have downloaded all the updates for vista. I can install cb9 and it will work for a while i.e. 1-2 times then it will give me a .dll error. Some other cb products work e.g. Junior 9 and others don't e.g. Fritz 9 and Hiarcs 10.
any advice is appreciated and no I haven't e-mail cb support as a) they are glacial in response time and b) the last problem I had I e-mailed them with the solution!!!! when I eventually worked it out.
regards

Have you set CBase9.exe to always run in administrator mode? I had some problems until I did that, although my problems were different than you describe.

Hi,

it is probably a stupid suggestion but check things like anti-virus, firewall, etc...

I have been running Chessbase 9 on Windows Vista (in addition 64 bits) for many months now without a single problem and I don't run it as an administrator.

Second question : when you talk about updates, it is Windows' updates or CB's updates ? May be you need both.

best regards,
Alain

The problem I had was after opening a game in a database, and then editing it, I could not save the edited game back into that same database. Have you been able to do that OK?

Huh? How did you do that? Can you give us some details about the installation procedure. I tried nearly everything, but it refused to run under a standard user account.

I don't use Vista but can you check the event viewer as it could be a permission problem. For example I installed a chess app and started it fine and it complained about a missing dll. I got the missing dll from the internet, virus scanned it and put it in the windows folder.

When I started the app as a regular user it complained because the dll was in the windows folder but as it had been in the admin folder it was admin only permission. Resetting the permission enabled me to use the app without any further problems.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot! It was indeed a permission problem. I should have known that standard users don't have write permission to the program files folder. However CB9 needs to write some file in there... Another example for not following the Microsoft guidelines...

Sorry if I look as too much harsh, but the best path to follow is to uninstall Vista. I tried to use it, but it kicked out most of my programs, printers, etc. Real shit, so I came back to XP. At last this one has been patched fully to date.
Perhaps you will be capable of instalin CB), but then sooner or later you will face problems of other kind, probably mire serious.

I too badly wanted Vista in my PC, but I could not regards
