I have expended years playing chess. I have played machines and people. I have read several books. I have examined lot of games. I have been lurking around this place since ever. And even so, a couple of days ago, I lost a knight for nothing to an absolute patzer. And so the game.
This show to me I have learned nothing and I have forgot everything.

So, which is the use of so many years????

Re: So, which is the use of so many years????
sadly Fern
as you get older and older you will blunder more and more pieces away for nothing
soon you will even forget how the pieces move
the final stage will be when you sit in front of the chess board and you will try to put the pieces into your mouth
thankfully i am no wheres near any of these stages yet but it is clear that you are already in the first stage
its better to stop now and save yourself the humiliation
Have A nice Day Regards

Fernando, I'm in the same position as you, ie, playing chess since
before the wheel was invented, and hanging pieces. This chess
blindness is experienced by chess professionals, and can be a
problem. Regular breaks away from the game, even just a week,
is good for your game. You will, after a week, be craving for your
chess 'fix', and will trounce people rated way higher than you.
Of course, chess is addictive and you are hooked! But it's a nice
addiction, harmless and cheap. In place of chess, what will you play,
snakes and ladders?

Each great chess player had moments, when he threw away pieces for nothing. Some years ago Karpow lost a game in about 12 moves in Wijk aan Zee. Should he have stopped playing chess? Blundering is quite normal and part of the game, as we are humans and far from being perfect. It's the same with all things in life, whether in sports, in love or what ever you want. The right medicine is humor and a philosophical point of view, like grandmaster Fritz Saemisch, who sometimes lost all his tournament games on time.

Hey Fernando,
Don't worry about it, chess can give fun and just play when you feel like it.
Not too much, then it's like your brain doesn't want to anymore after a while and goes into chess-tiredness or chess-protest, just have a relaxing game once a week or every two weeks when you play against computers, and perhaps you can play more often against humans because they tend to chess-tire less.
I tend to start missing all sorts of simple things when I'm chess-tired, and then I just need a week or more of chess-avoidance, then it's fresh again and the fun in chess has returned.
What also helps for me is to play some other games besides chess to make chess-fresh again, or to watch some strong chess-players chess-play, I tend to have renewed chess-freshness if I just chess-watch some IM's or GM's duking it out on some chess-server.
Don't drop the chess-shit but follow these chess-steps and do away with chess-brain-chess-protest-regards,
Stan

Computer chess can help you become better or worse chess
player.
The important thing is to keep playing to keep your mind active.
If you drop chess where will your mind wonder. Rest your mind,
there will be time for that later.

Keep up the good work play chess,
Gerold.
