The Old Nimzo

Post by ArmyBridge »

Hi Friends.
Recently I have had interest in this program(Nimzo), this I read in the Web of Harald's chess:
"In the reference list for chess programs, the SSDF, Nimzo 8 is even rated lower than its predecessor. I am not able to say if this is true. It is fact that Nimzo 8 shows genious as well as stupid moves but I admit all testing seem to prove that between Nimzo 7.32 and Nimzo 8 there is almost no progress. Nimzo 8 still has no sound evaluation. To get a sound evaluation, other programs should be taken. I must admit that Nimzo is the only program for me without "personality". All other programs obtain some kind of personal character because of the playing style. GambitTiger attacking without compromise, ChessTiger the positional and tactical safe "Karpov", Shredder the strategist. I cannot find it for Nimzo, seems to make moves without a plan or strategy, just fishing. However, since ages the opening book is of highest quality. " :( I thought that it was a better program, I would like that somebody gave its opinion about this engine, and I would like which version is teh best among NImzo 7 and Nimzo 2000. In a old Spanish magazine I read that in its time ,Nimzo was the strongest tactical engine, (Nimzo 2000) even Junior 7?? I played trough some games and I could not draw conclusions yet, some one want to tell something about this :?: tnx :P

In my private rating list I have this:

Nimzo 8.0 2266_25/48
Nimzo 7.32 2135_22/48
Nimzo 2000b 2082_24/56
Nimzo’99 2079_35/78

Too little number of games as the rating list is being calibrated currently but my own observations show that Nimzo 8 is much stronger than Nimzo 7.32....
These games were played using long time controls, own opening books and enabled learning feature :!:

I excluded Nimzo 2000b from tournaments as it crashes way too many times under XP. Did you caliberate the rating list with a beginner rate of 2200 or something? I am pretty sure Nimzo is at least rated 2500.

I wouldn't regard Nimzo 8 as being "without personality".
I find that it has an entertaining style of play.
Nimzo 8 is included in our CCRL testing.

Regards, Graham.
