Engine as we see them

Post by playjunior »

Well, I am restricted to free ones now. Except I've got Fritz 10 with Chessbase Light Premium but it is not UCI so I cannot play it in Arena.
I would like to know the forum members' opinions and recommendations about different engines, their performance, when they are good and when bad etc.
I would like to hear your opinions and experiences about different engines. What is good at what? What is the "character" of your favorite engines?

As far what I have noticed so far,
1. Out of Glaurung, Fruit, Toga, Rybka, and Fritz, forced tactical shots are found by Fritz fastest.
2. Glaurung (I use 1.2.1 now) has some very nice endgame knowledge: it outplayed Fruit in a couple of occasions in rather innocent endgames. Toga 1.3.4 seemed also good when I analyzed a couple of endgame positions.
3. Rybka seems to be the best at exchanging right pieces in non-tactical positions. It adds advantage almost after any exchange.
4. Toga 1.3.1 is the most drawish so far in the tournament that is running. It has 7 non-drawn games out of 16. Fruit has drawn 2 out of 17, both with Toga.
