I had asked some members here on how to use Arena to play with programs written in several dialects of Basic. I did not get an answer that I understood well enough to make it work. Failing that I contacted Arena directly and thier answer was even more cloudy.
By chance while looking at the engine set up more carefully I notice a button about half way down the page that said "Add Player". As soon as I clicked this button it asked me for the name of the 'human' player. If I tread all basic programs as humans I can get on with my tournement.
I have in the neighborhood of 25 to 30 programs written in Basic. For a test fixture though I am going to use TSCP. I also will use the first program ever written for PC's and that is Peter Jennings Microchess. It was only rated at about 650 elo when it came out. Last but not least I am going to use a Novag Solo as it has been reported to have a low elo rating also.
This will mean somewhere around 500 or so games all entered by hand so don't expect to see any results real soon. In the mean time I am still testing all engines before deciding to use them just to make sure that they all work properly. Of the ones that I plan to use I will try to compile them to make them even faster.
If all this does not work then I'll need a program recorder that will save the results in a 'pgn' file.
Even though the chess rating chart only goes down to "E" ratings which is about 1,000 to 1099 eloI expect some programs to go much lower as if a F, G, H. of I rating were possible. Only time will tell.

It looks like you don't read seriously what experienced users write as an answer to your question....Bill Rogers wrote:I had asked some members here on how to use Arena to play with programs written in several dialects of Basic.
