Engines imitating human playing styles / Shredder profiles?

Post by ZeroOne »

Hello! I was wondering whether any of the current top engines can easily be taught to imitate the playing style of certain human players? I've got the old Chessmaster 9000 and it has some "personalities" to choose from, such as Alexander Alekhine, Bobby Fischer and Mikhail Botvinnik. Now, I'm not that impressed with the other capabilities of the CM9000 game so earlier this year I bought Shredder 10. I discovered you can also create different personalities or "profiles" for it. The question is, is there any software I could use to input a large amount of games by a certain individual and it would automatically adjust the various parameters to match their play as closely as possible? It could also create a special opening book mimicking his or her openings.

Also, has anyone done any comparisons/ranking lists between the various Shredder 10 personalities (Kamikaze, Gambit, Beancounter, ..)? What kind of situations are they suited for? Is one of them always inferior/superior? Etc...

No, you have to tweak them by hand (Thought you may want to analyze the ChessMaster or Prodeo personalities and try to translate them into Shredder, just to see if it gives the desired effect).
Your beliefs create your reality, so be careful what you wish for.
