Rybka 2.3.2a x64 t4 - Zappa Mexico x64 (3 different testing)

Post by Sedat Canbaz »

Hello there,

Currently i plan to test ''Rybka 2.3.2a x64 t4 - Zappa Mexico x64 t4'' in 3 different ways:

Test Conditions:
---------------------
Hardware:QX6700 Quad 2.66GHz
O/S:Windows XP Professional x64
Fritz GUI/Arena GUI/ShredderClasic GUI
Time control:4 min+2 sec
Ponder OFF
Tournament type:Engine-Matches
Hashtable size:128 MB
TB Cache:16 MB
Endgames:Tablebases(3-4-5 Men)
Total games per Book:100
Both Engines will use 4 threads (4 CPU)

1)DeepFritz10 GUI,Own Books,Tablebases ON

2)ShredderClasic GUI,Perfect12a.bkt(with reversed colors),Tablebases ON

3)Arena1.99b4 GUI,No Books,No Tablebases

*Any comments about which own books for both engines will be helpful ?!

Best Wishes,

Hi, Sedat. Short of asking the authors themselves about the best book, personally i would use RybkaII.ctg and i have been told by more than one person that TourBookII.ctg is a very good book for Zappa (with learning on) Hope this helps.

Sedat, i forgot to mention this- tho you may already know. In case you are not aware of it, with Rybka's ctg books, you cannot inside chessbase reset the learning weights to zero like you can with Shredder, Fritz, Hiarcs and Junior ctg books. Your only option to get the weights back to zero is delete the book and reinstall it, tho presumably i suppose you could just leave it in there and reinstall over what was already there. As for the TourBook in this regard, i dont know. I have never used it.

Hello George,

Thanks...

I think to use for Rybka 2.3.2a:RybkaII_final.ctg book
and for Zappa Mexico:Zap!Chess.ctg book

BTW,both books learning functions will be enabled

Best,

Well I've never had a problem doing that using Edit\Openings Book\Reset Weights in DJ10 and DF10 GUIs. All Rybka.ctg and RybkaII.ctg weights reset to zero. Resetting the move marks (green red !! etc) is a different matter and would have to be done manualy.

My statement about not resetting the weights to zero for Rybka books came directly from Vas. I may have misspoke in saying you could not do it, or make it appear that you had. Vas just told me to never, ever do it., Rather reinstall the book. Possibly you should discuss this with him yourself. I may be mistaken, but i believe it discusses just this in the "Read Me" that comes with the first Rybka book.

Yes I think that's right and I always paste across an unused version of the book when starting a new engine match with the Rybka engine and book combination. I have reset to zero when adding games to book to adjust the book focus for another engine. The Rybka books with Rybka engines have always seemed very good benchmarks to test against other engines and their supplied books in match play. This is where the difficulty comes in with Zappa being without a supplied book and it is clear the appropriateness of the book will have some influence on the Zappa engine performance. I have created a relatively small book with about 35k games from the CB power book plus just under 50K sourced games with as much Zappa content as I could find. In 40/4 matched PC vs PC testing Zappa plus this book has a marginal lead over Rybka 2.3.2a plus RybkaII.ctg and my impression of Zappa Mexico is that other than at 3 to 5 minute Blitz games, the engine performance seems considerably better than test houses' Elo ratings suggest. Particularly during line testing when it was found to do quite well in less frequently played opemings including a 44 move win as White playing Bird's opening against Rybka. It also managed 3 consecutive wins and a draw playing Alekhines as Black against Hiarcs 11.2 mp so its ability seems quite broad.
The Bird's game is posted below and was played on two matched AMD 4800x2 machines

I think that the Zap!Chess book is just outdated and that the Rybka book is going to tear it to pieces. I recommend TourbookII.ctg, here's what Anthony Cozzie said about it on his report:

Zappa Mexico does not come with an opening book. I've heard good things about TourbookII.ctg though
