Options -chessboard - colors.
I think that is only options.

I'm pretty certain that's what the answer was but I was hoping that there would be some way that I could add some slightly different colors.

You can change the colors. Go to options -> chessboard -> colors. There are now 4 places you can customize (light squares, dark squares, selected squares, and suggested move squares). If you select one of these, you can then change the red,green, blue composition or you can enter the hex value of the color you desire in the selection box. Given that you have the flexibility of putting in even hex values of colors, I feel this is probably sufficient.
