On take-backs

Post by Ovyron »

Please, answer "Yes" to the question if when your opponent asks for a take-back, you actually consider giving it instead of ignoring it, and may actually accept it, and "No" if you don't give take-backs under any circumstance.

I was on the "No" side for a very long time, because I never asked for take-backs, so accepting them was handicapping myself, until I realized the following:

When usually receiving a take-back request, is because the opponent made a horrible blunder, and not accepting it would mean the end of the game (the opponent resigning), not giving the take-back means disallowing you from the chance of learning something more about the game.

By accepting a take-back, you now risk drawing or losing a won game, but the result of the game, or the rating points you lose in the process should not matter at all. If what you enjoy is playing the game, then I don't see a reason to suddenly end the actual game and claim you won just because your opponent had a mouse-slip.

So, since then I've been accepting take-back (though only one per game) and I don't regret it, the games have been more fun and interesting than just "You blundered! I won! Next game..."

What do you think about this? (Yes, this thread was inspired by Ted's 8) )
Your beliefs create your reality, so be careful what you wish for.

I answered No, I also have it posted in my finger notes. Mistakes are part of the game as far as I'm concerned. I would not dream of asking for a takeback either.

I never allow take back even on obvious online misclick. Taking back give a possibility of cheating (non sportsmanship play due overboard psychological pressure).

I never allow take backs. If you allow one take back in the
game more take backs will come :)

By the book,

Gerold.

It depends:
I voted No because that is my normal answer.
I used to give take-backs at any request. After giving take-backs
and the same opponent not giving me one in the same game, I decided
a uniform response of no is correct.

I could put such a person on my noplay list but one can lose to
new opponents doing it.

However, there is an exception - I used to give take-backs for very
obvious mouseslips in Freestyle events. The Freestyle rules on this have
evolved over the last year and people are more practiced so I do it
less and less.

If I know it's a good looking woman than yes I'll give as many take backs as she ask for. :)
