Apparently someone on the forums has seen fit to put me in quite a predicament. That is, I was nominated for moderator. I'd like to put out some thoughts on the issue, and see where I stand in the eyes of the members.
Pro:
I'd like to offer something back to the community.
I'd like to see more variety in the choices for moderator.
I am not satisfied with the current 'crisis' in any way; I would like to see CCC the way it used to be.
Con:
I have very little time. I have a 40 hr./wk. job, school, a girlfriend, and a chess program being prepared for a tournament. I doubt the time left over would be sufficient for moderating.
I don't know if anyone knows me very well, or would vote for me (maybe more of a pro...)
As I assume that members here still like computer chess, the amount of time I spend here is directly subtracted from time spent on programming.
I'm rather leaning towards not running, but if someone nominated me, I feel a duty to at least think about it. So I ask:
Why was I nominated? Should I run? Would you vote for me?
Additional information that might help:
I am 19 years old. I have been a CCC member since 2002. I have a chess program that is getting stronger (currently about 2400) slated for an open source release. I don't know if I could be completely impartial. I think moderators should have little visibility when moderating. I don't like editing posts or locking threads. I think ICD should have absolutely no influence on the board. I am not completely opposed to a TCAdmin, but their identity and actions should be public knowledge (ICD was wrong to ask Sam to keep his identity private). Moderators should have no special privileges other that deleting posts and banning members.
PLEASE DO NOT VOTE FOR ME.
Zach

Re: Deciding whether to run
IMO you should run.
the job costs not much time.
even if you don't read ccc regularly, you get the complaints send as emails to your home account.
then you can moderate or discuss (e.g. PM) with your other moderators or decide yourself.
if you are busy, one of the 3 will do it.
you are very young. democracy is important.
i think it would be a good idea to see you accept nomination.
CCC belongs to the members. you are certainly one of them!

It doesn't take that much time if some huge controversy doesn't arise.Zach Wegner wrote:I have very little time.

i think you should run as well Zach
one word of caution though
the positive feedback you will receive here is no indication of the actual number of votes you will receive when it comes time for the members to actually vote
i ran last time and the amount of encouraging and positive emails and Pm's i received ..far exceeded the actual votes i received

You should run again. Even George W Bush lost his first election, and look where he is now. No, wait, bad analogy. Sorry.Steve B wrote:i think you should run as well Zach

Given how reluctant you seem to be, I would say not. There is no reason for you to feel obligated to run just because someone nominated you.Zach Wegner wrote:Should I run?
If just you were added to the current list of candidates, I would.Zach Wegner wrote:Would you vote for me?

Zach, What a magnificent exercise in self-publicity, spinning yourself as a reluctant candidate! I can't compliment you enough - your successful future in politics is assured.
