VISTA question - change priority of an engine process

Post by Werner »

Hi,
on one of my pcs I use VISTA 64bit. I am an admin user.
When I try to change the priority of a chess engine process I get this message (translated):
The procedure could not be finished. Access denied

The same thing on Windows XP is running without problem using also the TaskManager.

Is there a solution for VISTA?

regards

This is a huge pain in Vista. The only solution I found was using Odd Gunnar Malin's excellent and free "Inbetween" utility. For example I launch chessbase 9 with a shortcut target:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\CHESSBASE\CB9\InBetween.exe" /p below Cbase9.exe

Then all engines launched from within Chessbase start with a below normal priority.

Can change priority here no problems (not that I would want to). If you have user account control turned off, Vista x64 allows you to do it

Thanks Ray, that is a much simper solution.

The reason I often want to change priorities is that engines running in the background with normal priority can make my computer very unresponsive if I want to both use the engine and do other things with the computer at the same time.
