Due to the fact there are too many good moves to look at and would also win, I will fast forward the position where only 1 move that is a sacrifice can win, but computers, and I mean all computers will think the move inferior, yet it's the best move!! :o

Yes Terry this is well known and indeed one of the hardest.


The solution is of course(all forced for black):
1. Rxf6 exf6 2. Qxd6 Rc6 3. Qxe5!! fxe5 4.Rf1! and now black is doomed to wait the white light Bishop to pin and kill the black King....
After his son's birth they've asked him:

Well, for one thing, I KNEW it had to be a sacrifice on f6. This was alot easier for me to surmise than many combinations I tried to solve from some recent books of combination/tactical tests. In fact some recent books are just unfair imho.
They ask for moves which need detailed calculation before even knowing which of eg 5 choices to choose from. Is it called chess cjhoice challenge or something? Some are easier and just up my street, but most have catches in them. They require much more hard detailed work than what one (ie _I_) is ready to put in just as a 5 minute diversion.

George, do you know of other Game/Combinations that equels or surpasses this one in complexity and depth and foils all machines?

I'm trying to get a collection of the most difficult combinations that have been proven correct and are still beyond the scope of computers.

P.S. I still believe there is a lot of room for program improvement and such difficult positions should be one of the focal points towards that end.

I. Depth of Combinations.

II. Deep Zugzwangs.

III. Fortress Positions and Stonewalls, including totally closed positions.

IV. Planning and Multi-Stage Planning.

I'm certain much more can be added to the list.

4...Qe7 5.Bd1 b5 6.Bb3 Rc4 7.a4! a6

And now what?

Very nice. Now that the solution has been posted, was this from an actual game? If so, could you post the complete score?

I know some people just like to watch the highlight reel, but I like to get the full story. :wink:
