X-mas knock-out tournament

Post by Yarget »

Hello everyone!

About 1 year ago the CSS Ratinglist (in which I was responsible for the SMP Ratinglist) unfortunately came to an end. This year I haven't been testing a lot (I have been quite busy) but know I'm enjoying my X-mas holiday and I've decided to run a small tournament. Here are the participants:

Rybka 2.3.2a mp 32 bit
SpikeMP 1.2 Turin
Deep Junior 10.1
Deep Fritz 10
Hiarcs 11.1 MP
Deep Shredder 11
Zap!Chess Zanzibar 2CPU 32 bit
LoopMP 11A.32

As you see a quite strong field although I must admit that some of the engines now exist in updated versions. Still I expect an interesting tournament in which Rybka (as always) is the clear favourite. Here are the tournamentconditions:

Windows XP Pro 32 bit
(Deep) Fritz 10 GUI
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200
512 MB Hashtables for each engine
3-4-5 Tablebases (32 MB cache)
Pondern OFF
Timecontrol: 40/20 repeatedly (20 minutes for 40 moves)
Books: each engine playing with its own book
Knockout system (four ¼ finals, two ½ finals and the final)

Each 1/4 -final = 12 games
Each 1/2 - final = 14 games
The final = 16 games

If a match ends with an equal score 4 more games are played and if the score is still equal then 2 games are played (and after that another 2 games until a winner is found).

Here follows the draw (based on seedning) for the ¼-finals:

Rybka 2.3.2a mp (1) - Deep Junior 10.1 (8)
Deep Fritz 10 (4) - Hiarcs 11.1 MP (5)
Zap!Chess Zanzibar 2CPU (3) – Loop 11A.32 (6)
Deep Shredder 11 (2) – SpikeMP 1.2 Turin (7)

And here follows the results of the 3 first quaterfinals:

Rybka 2.3.2a mp (1) - Deep Junior 10.1 (8) 9½-2½ (8 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat. Rybka lost the first game but showed no mercy in the continuation.)
Deep Shredder 11 (2) – SpikeMP 1.2 Turin (7) 8-4 (5 wins, 6 draws and 1 defeat. Spike put up a good deal of resistance but in the end Shredder was too strong.)
Deep Fritz 10 (4) - Hiarcs 11.1 MP (5) 7½-4½ (4 wins, 7 draws and 1 defeat. Hiarcs was leading 3½-2½ but then Fritz managed to turn around this tight match.)

Only one quarterfinal left and after that the semi’s will begin.

Best regards and merry X-mas

Hello Erik & Tony!

Thanks for your kind words. Although I haven't been testing in 2007 nor posting in this forum I have been following the development and news in computerchess 2007 with great interest (through this and other forums). I am still addicted to this hobby but the fact that the CSS Ratinglist (at least for the time being) is closed and the fact that I have been working very much in 2007 have made it almost impossible to do any kind of decent testing. Hopefully this will change sooner or later in the future.

One thing is for sure; it's damn fun running this small tournament. :D

Best regards

Hello everyone!

Today (while I was absent and celebrating X-mas with my family) the last 1/4-final was played:

Zap!Chess Zanzibar 2CPU (3) - LoopMP 11A.32 (6) 7-5 (6 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats). When I left the match noon earlier today Zap! had one the first game and quite frankly I expected a comfortable and easy win but it turned out different. In fact Loop was leading by 5 games to 4 before Zanzibar managed to win the last 3 games and with that the match. Having finished the last quaterfinal I'm now ready for the semifinals (14 games in each match). The four topseeded engines are through to the semi's and here are the pairings:

Rybka 2.3.2a mp (1) - Deep Fritz 10 (4)
Deep Shredder 11 (2) - Zap!Chess Zanzibar 2 CPU (3)

Especially the second match could turn out be a tight one, we'll see.

Hello everyone!

The result of the first semifinal:

Rybka 2.3.2a mp (1) - Deep Fritz 10 (4) 10-4 (7 wins, 6 draws and 1 defeat). Like in the quaterfinalmatch against Deep Junior 10.1 Rybka lost the first game of the match and again this defeat turned out to be the only one for Rybka in the whole match. Deep Fritz 10 struggled very well and in fact Fritz managed to keep the match even (2½-2½) until game 6.

I expect a more equal match in the second semifinal:

Deep Shredder 11 (2) - Zap!Chess Zanzibar 2 CPU (3)

Hello everyone!

Earlier today the second semifinal was completed:

Deep Shredder 11 (2) - Zap!Chess Zanzibar 2 CPU (3) 9½-4½ (7 wins, 5 draws and 2 defeats). I predicted a very close match and after the first 8 games I think I was right (4½-3½ Shredder was leading). However DS 11 was dominating the second half of the match and managed at the end to get a quite comfortable matchwin.

Following the four topseeds qualifying for the semifinal we now have the two topseeds qualifying for the final:

Rybka 2.3.2a mp (1) - Deep Shredder 11 (2) (16 games)

No doubt, Rybka is the clear favourite but I'm sure that Shredder will put up a good fight and make Rybka working for the victory. One thing is for sure, I'm really looking forward to follow this final.

Hello everyone!

The result of the final of my small X-mas tournament:

Rybka 2.3.2a mp (1) - Deep Shredder 11 (2) 10-6 (8 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats). After an early 3-0 lead for Rybka there was really never any doubt that the topseeded engine would win the final. As all important ratinglists show Rybka is the clear number 1 among chessengines. However Deep Shredder 11 played a strong tournament and I think that a 37,5% performance in the final was a very satisfying result.
