Help Installing Toga 3.1.2SE

Post by Howard E »

Both Chesspartner 5.4 or Arena will not install Toga on my AMD machine. Any suggestions? Thanks

The original TogaIIv3.1.2SE_P4_SSE2.exe kept crashing on my Athlon so I couldn't install it.

However, I un7zed the Additional Compiles by Denis Mendoza, and the Toga II 3.1.2SEp3.exe file worked fine (I didn't check the p4 one.)

The TogaIIv3.1.2SE_P4_SSE2.exe won't work with your Athlon processor as it doesn't support the SEE instructions :!:
Try the other .exe included in the archive....

What's the difference between Toga II 3.1.2SEp3.exe and Toga II 3.1.2SEp4.exe?

What are SEE instructions? And where is the archive?

He meant SSE. The other compiles are in a file called "Additional Compiles by Denis Mendoza.7z" inside the Toga archive.

Denis does not specify that in his message on the CCRL board but he says they are probably better choices for Athlon machines, the original from Charles is probably better for Intel machines and uses Intel's SSE instructions. I had no problems installing this one under Shredder UCI interface and it works well on my Athlon 2 GHz processor, so I don't know exactly what the other installation problems are about, it could be that not all Athlons support these SSE compiles equally well?

On the board Denis also mentions some compiles for Core 2 Duo machines but he could not test those. There should not be much gain possible from any 64 bit compiles for Toga.

Thanks Shaun. This code has no added algorithm but an improved revision of material evaluation and search efficiency (similar to 1.3.4 without egbb). Though I only saw small changes on the code from version 1.3.1, this one sure brought a big leap in strength on the original Toga. It worked, so I congratulate Chris Formula for this.

Just to add something, Intel pc users should use the original compile by Chris based on his feedbacks that his compile performed better than mine. AMD users could benefit on my ICC compiles. I maybe wrong, but there's plenty of exe to choose from .

Yes, I get this error when trying to run the original exe on my AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+:

So, many thanks to Denis Mendoza for his extra compiles =)

I'd still be interested in knowing if the p4 version would perform better on my machine, perhaps I should make some tests.

This is a typical SSE problem, your processor doesn't support this .exe with these instructions :!:

The original Toga 3.1.2SE binary 'TogaIIv3.1.2SE_P4_SSE2" by Chris was a MSVC 2008 build. It runs fine on my Athlon 64 pc, but was slower than my compiles. Someone compiled it for Chris.

Chris only requested me to make additional compiles. I used command switches for builds compatible to both Intel and AMD hardware, using the Intel compiler. Here are the specs:

P3 version is for Intel® Pentium® III processors and and Intel® Pentium® III Xeon® processors, as well as processors not made by Intel (like AMD) that support SSE (Streaming SIMD Extensions) instructions.

P4 version is for Intel Pentium® 4 processors and Intel® Xeon® processors with SSE2, as well as processors not made by Intel that support SSE2 and SSE instructions.

I hope this clears the issue.

I wiould gladly compile excutables for older pc too, upon request. It only needs a few minutes to do it though.
