BigLion80

Post by Matthias Gemuh »

ArcBishop80 and BigLion80 are chess engines primarily for 10x8 chess.
The engines are still very very very slow for several reasons.
Presently, random numbers are added to the evaluations of ArcBishop80 to stop
games from repeating.

Of course ArcBishop80 and BigLion80 also play normal chess and Chess960.
As UCI engines, choose UCI HAha for Chess960 and Capablanca for
Capablanca chess in ChessGUI 0.058 or later.
As WB engines, choose WB_OO for Chess960 and Capablanca for
Capablanca chess in ChessGUI 0.058 or later.

Note that ArcBishop80 and BigLion80 are genuinely very very very slow and so
BigLion80 cannot replace BigLion. The 2 engines are completely different from
each other. BigLion80 seems to have some strange eval bug that may be fixed
in next version.

Supported variants are Carrera, Embassy, Janus, Normal, Chess960, Capablanca,
8x8Capablanca, Gothic, Bird, Caparandom.

Thanks but is Chancellor dead? :(

Or BigLion is a renamed Chancellor?
After his son's birth they've asked him:
"Is it a boy or girl?"
YES! He replied.....

Chancellor died because Fairy-Max and Joker80 surfaced ;).
Chancellor was only companion to permit ArcBishop to play eng-eng 10x8.

Best,
Matthias.

But I had understood that ArcBishop was a 10x8 version of BigLion, and Chancellor a 10x8 version of Taktix??? So what is BigLion80 now, and how does it differ from ArcBishop80?

Why do you say that they "of course" also play normal Chess? Joker80 cannot play normal Chess!

I said ArcBishop plays the materialistic style of BigLion,
and Chancellor the sacrificial style of Taktix.

BigLion/Taktix differ only in eval.
Same for ArcBishop/Chancellor.

I like data structures of ArcBishop more than of BigLion, so it is ArcBishop that has better chances to be further developped.

Immediately I locate the eval bug that is killing BigLion80 since this morning I will update. Meanwhile others can unveil other bugs.

I think an engine that plays 10x8 should also play 8x8. Users certainly would appreciate it, though a bitboard approach significantly slows down my 8x8.

Best,
Matthias.

In a year or so there can be quite a large number of 10x8 engines. I hope to supply one as well, but it's on the stage of defining classes and recently I'm a bit short of time.

Ability to play 8x8 chess can be essential for tests as long as there are not too many opponents - and, as it has been said, it's great for users too.

Should BigLion 2.23x still be regarded as best for normal chess?

Yes - that's what I took it to mean, but just wanted to make sure. :P

Hi Graham,
BigLion uses fast 64-bit integers as bitboards.
BigLion80 uses a slow home-made 80-bit class as bitboards.
For 8x8 chess, BigLion is better than BigLion80.
When eval bug shall be fixed (soon), BigLion80 shall be clearly stronger than ArcBishop80 in all variants.
Best,
Matthias.
