speedtrap

hi,

While running my computer account pulsar on icc i heard the sound of a tell. I am using winboard_f and with winboard_f you can get sounds while in zippy mode. I had set it to the icc 'alert' sound.

I had been chatting for last 2 hours with a freind in an irc room and berfore that a freind in seattle, and i was surprised to hear the alert sound and began checking my windows. the third window i check is winboardf, with pulsar it had been on last 72 hours.

someone says: your a good player. i respond 'say thanks' after i find the tell. well after another 30 minutes speaking to a freind in an irc room and doing some tasks i check my bots history ( which i did initally but didnt see him as haveing played) and see he was his last opponent and my bot won. I was curious to see the game that provoked that tell. But it eneded on move 3 with a resignation with just e2e4e7e5g1f3b1c3.

For a second I thought perhaps i should report it. It was his first crazyhouse game and he achieved a decent rating by losing. It would prove that as an operator I am responsible, ( seems to be a reasonable obligation of an operator ) and proactive to make sure my bot is a fair part of the rating system.

well i thought this guy had like 7 games with a 1 to 1 record in bullet and a 1500 rating there. other ratings like 1200 with 1 or 2 losses including a loss at crazyhouse against my bot.

I decided not to. I dont want any obligations to good citizenship to get in teh way of my interaction of the various people who play my bot.

but i couldnt help but thinking, probably a rational judge might well expectiing that you always report what your obligated to, would judge it similar to me as no big deal. But does icc speedtrap work that way.

On icc it seems like the catching people, hence the name speedtrap, ( for non americans a speedtrap is a cop hidden on the side of the road waiting for someone to go by who is going to fast ( ususally on a fast section of road ))

Catching people perhaps makes speedtrap think in terms of cost of finding out rating abuse and a proportional punishment for the work neccesary to catch. This guy for a relativly minor and harmless offense is none the less part of what could be a rating abuse scheme , resigning on first move, also he is knew, a known class of offendors, so based on risk factors or ablity to catch i would expect some level of action perhaps a ratings adjustment or a warning of ratings adjustment. to a rational person this is not a big deal but he has entered the system.

Well none of that for me. If a grave ratings abuse occurs on one of my bots i will report it. But beyond that everything will be dealt with privately. I noplay or change book on line repeaters no more. And in wilds you deal with that a lot.

Yours
Mike

I don't report anything. people do all sorts of things and I wouldn't report it to ICC because I don't care enough.
