Toga II 1.4.1SE T2e2 very well (PGN).

I post today here my last new Setting:

For analyses this setting was the best in my own Testsuite.

Now I played before few minutes with this Setting 5 Blitzgames on Playchess. My Nick was Solist. Toga 1.4.1SE (T2n2) played very well.

After 5 games (3x Rybka, 1x Naum, 1x Fritz 11) It scored +2 =2 -1.

GUI = HIARCS 10 (ChessProgram 9)
Hash = 256 MB
EGBB = OFF (I have installed the Bitbaes 3+4+5, but for Blitz I would not play with him)
Server = Playchess.com, Engine Room
Book = My Random.CTG (that is not my strongest CTG-Book (sorry), but it is my allround Book for all Engines, it hase 481 MB).

In game 3 I played vs. the new Naum 3 64-Bit, but I seen a problems in the Depth of Toga on my PC. Toga comes not in the normally Depth. I do not know why? Game goes in short time lost.

So you must be seeing things of randomness. There should not be difference in what you put in the king safety.

I don't understand how that could be, unless Fritz remembers different settings than what it says is using. The only two lines where KingSafetyMargin appears are:

KingSafetyMargin = option_get_int("Toga King Safety Margin");

The sourcecode creates the variable and still reads a new value that you put in it, but it is not used anywhere else in the program. I think that if you were to play without book, the start of each game at least should be the same against a fixed opponent, but on Playchess that is difficult to arrange. I don't feel much for doing the experiment myself, and I don't have Fritz. I'm blaming Fritz at the moment if this really is true. Good luck with your games!

As much as I respect you (without stealing your thunder on this issue). Eelco, Ulysses and Jarkko are right. All of your parameter settings contributed to an improved personality for Toga 1.4.1SE, except for your "Toga King Safety Margin".

The new Toga MP versions do not use "KingSafetyMargin" option, though the variable is still there.


As Eelco mentioned in eval.cpp, you could only see these lines:

eval.cpp (54):static int KingSafetyMargin = 1700;
eval.cpp (190): KingSafetyMargin = option_get_int("Toga King Safety Margin");

It only has an initial value and option with no functioning code yet!

If we insert this in eval.cpp (taken from Toga 1.2.1a),

eval.cpp (2023): if (KingSafety && penalty > 22 && mat_info->pv[COLOUR_OPP(colour)] > KingSafetyMargin)
eval.cpp (2024): penalty = (penalty * (mat_info->pv[COLOUR_OPP(colour)]/(KingSafetyMargin/100))) / 100;

then chnaging the UCI-option from 1700 to 1300 will work

option.cpp (71): { "Toga King Safety Margin", true, "1300", "spin", "min 500 max 3000", NULL },
