endgame test position

Post by David Dahlem »

This position is from a Sage test game. Sage played Na2+ and this move obviously loses. The question is whether Na4+ or Nb1+ is best, and can Black win from this position?

Here is the complete game. Interesting endgame. I thought for sure Sage could draw but blundered on move 95.

Re: endgame test position

Post by Eelco de Groot »

Hello David,

Toga Checkov would have played 95.Nb1+ I think but within the first seconds it also plays Na2 and that seems to remain in second spot for a long time. I can't do multivariation analysis that would have been the best way to look at the choices here. The eval is a pawn and a half but it does not seem to be growing.

I am pretty sure Black wins no matter what move White plays. Fritz 11 with QP vs QP and some of the other 6 man tablebases gets to a +9 eval after a few minutes.

Sorry for posting a similar analysis but I wanted to show what I get with the compile made by Denis, there is a marked speed-up of almost exactly 30% in the final NPS in this position :!: Toga Exchange Bonus was set to 40, without it this version plays 95. Na2+ for a long time :!: Although it probably makes no difference for the endresult, the tuning seemed a bit off with Toga Exchange Bonus at 35.

Also now the score is still decreasing ever so slightly for White at 18 ply deep. A shootout with Toga vs. Toga (my own compile) leads to a win for Black quickly.
