On the Chessbase website there is a opening survey of what is referred to as "A New Marshall Gambit"
http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=4520
Lars Schandorff comes to the conclusion that "The new d5-line is an interesting and easy to learn variation for Black that so far has scored pretty well even on the highest level." and I agree.

However my thoughts were that Shirov's quiet 11.d3 is simple and best for white, other than accepting the gambit. Given the complex counter play black gets in this gambit. Does anyone know how the Chess Engines fair when using this line? Anyone with a good Computer games database have any win /loss data?

Re: The New Marshall Gambit
Hello Ted,
Here's what I found in my quite eclectic database:
I think here it's a matter of style. I don't see any reason for not accepting the challenge posed by blacks with 10...d5 of course in a game played by GMs. Also the counterattack 11. d4 is equally strong, complicating the game. IMO this is a way to win a long time control game.
Shirov's choice 11. d3 is good given the blitz conditions, but in fact I think nothing more than a draw can be obtained this way... Of course just a humble oppinion...
Here is another game where Adams missed a victory against SuperMagnus:

Re: The New Marshall Gambit
Hi Ted,
I have some tournaments with this position.

After a last tournament (Division Cadet), i will publish a opening report.
The Tournoi Thématique this month will also be played with this position with longer time control (40/60+30). I just hope to have Hiarcs 12 for starting this tournament.
Regards,
Patrick

Re: The New Marshall Gambit
The differences between this and Marshall are: in Marshall the black Knight on c6 instead of a5, white pawn is on h2 instead of h3 and Bishop is on b3 instead of c2. I have a feeling that this favours white. In a long run this is probably something like Kasparov's d5 in Sicilian that he played in '84 match against Karpov. Surprise, tactical, but will be analyzed and to clear white advantage and fade away after some time.
I hope so, otherwise top GMs will simply stop playing 1.e4

I think White can improve Adams' line with 14 d3! (White controls c4 now) Bxe5 15 Re1 Re8 16 Bf4 c5 17 Nbd2 Rc8 18 Re3 when I don't think Black has enough for the pawn.
Any thoughts?
All the best,

Re: The New Marshall Gambit
14.d3 looks like a very good move, after which it seems White should retain an advantage. However Black has some compensation in his better development and two bishops, and the line you give starting with 15...Re8 may not be as promising for Black as some of his alternatives, so 10...d5!? still looks like something that might appeal to attacking players who want to avoid reams of Marshall Gambit theory and/or the anti-Marshall systems.Stephen Ham wrote:I think White can improve Adams' line with 14 d3! Hi,
I have not reviewed the games yet, however I found it interesting that the weaker the Divisions got, the worst the chess engines scored as Black ....
