Hello all, My first post here for a while. I'm not very techo, to say
the least, so I'm hoping someone here can help me.
I normally play on FICS with my personal computer, but I'd like
to play there out on the back porch with my Pocket PC. So, to that
end I have managed to install a program called Thinkerboard which
plays on FICS. However, when I log in I get a message saying
"failed to run helper or connect to server". I can connect normally
on my PC, so there's no server or line problem. Also, my Pocket PC
does connect to the internet normally via Internet Explorer. I can't
figure out what the problem might be. Any responses would be
appreciated.
all the best
Larry
PS Thinkerboard is working fine when I play a game directly
against it, although there is no opening book. That's not a problem,
because the intention was only to play online.

Re: How to connect to FICS with Thinkerboard on Pocket PC
I'm guessing that its just an intermittent connection issue.
How about trying the following:
1. Start Internet Explorer and connect to http://freechess.org. This is just to verify that there no connection problem. You can then close IE once you have verified this.
2. Now, run _StartThinkBoard. In the "Server" option, type-in "freechess.org 23" or "freechess.org 5000". Note that you are specifying the 'port'.
3. If that does not work still, try turning off the "Timeseal" option. You may have discovered a bug in the built-in timeseal.
4. Lastly, check if your router/firewall has restrictions on outbound ports 23 and 5000.
Cheers!

Hi Lance, and thanks for the help. Yep, it was the time seal that
was the problem. I unchecked it and everything works fine. Could
you tell me one thing: I downloaded just last night, and you
announced the new version just today, so did I get the new
version, or the previous one?
Thanks for a great interface,
all the best to you

The latest one should be version 0.2.0018.
