1) Battery

2) Portability

If you don`t care about 1 & 2 but still want to buy a laptop, think again. If you still want it (maybe for a Desktop replacement, uh?) get the largest and best screen and a powerful processor, with at least 2 GB of RAM - that should be good for chess stuff. Of course you should think about all the other things you`ll want to do with your new laptop (other than using a word processor and browse the Internet).

Remember that most laptops are not upgradable. If you don`t want a portable computer, than think again and buy a powerful desktop.

I own an "old" Ferrari WLMi 4005 (Turion 64) and a new Quad Q6600 (home-built). I`m using the Quad for most of my chess programs... because it is _much_ faster; but for Internet browsing and Office purposes, I use the laptop.

Just my 2 cents.

powerful processor for laptop?

Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 2.40 Ghz 800 MHz FSB 3 Mb L2-cache
3 Gb RAM 667
320 GB SATA
Geforce 8600M GT 256 Mb
DVD - RW
Windows Vista

Dell ~ 729 € + IVA

I think it's a good laptop for chess and not too expensive.

Are any of the machines that play online ICC/Playchess laptops or are they massive multi-processor systems?
