Hi,
I was wondering: are there any known good methods for determing what pieces to ignore in a certain position? (scene? position? not sure what the English word is, in Dutch we call it "stelling")

The word is indeed 'position'. My engines do not ignore pieces. Just moves.

Hi Folkert,
just search for best move and then ignore all pieces that cannot execute that move

Frankly, if your question had some easy answer, every chess programmer would write an unbeatable engine.
