This position was reached in a 10 minute game between Shredder 11 vs. Hiracs 11 (SP), played on a 32bit 3Ghz (HT) system. Other than the fact that white's queen is somewhat misplaced on the a2 square, white does not look to bad.
Most engines that I had look at this position prefer Bf8, Rc8 or Qb6 for black in the position posted above. This fact proved true even on my 64bit Core2Duo system. So I was surprised when watching this game when Hiarcs 11 played g5!! and went on to win the game. I gave the position to the latest version of Hiarcs 12 (MP) and it also favors g5 as well.
The game followed with ...g5, Bd3 g4, Ne1 Qg5 and black went on to win from the position below:

Re: Who else finds g5??
Glaurung is not as enthusiastic about the move as Hiarcs, Glaurung in three best mode finds it at 19 plies in third spot, at twenty plies it is the first choice, then it drops again and now at 24 plies it is finally on top again, with g4 and Qg5, but only with a small margin:

g5 is the only move Crafty considers here... I did not look at it carefully, but there must be some forcing reason why that is the right move...AdminX wrote:[d]r2qr1k1/3b1pbp/2p3p1/1pRp4/p2P4/P3PN2/QP2BPPP/5RK1 b - - 0 18

Re: Who else finds g5??
It forces White pieces into retreat on the K-Side while White's pieces on the Q-Side are locked down and out of play and now Black generates a quick fluid attack on the K-Side with it's own pieces.bob wrote:g5 is the only move Crafty considers here...
[d]r3r1k1/3b1pbp/2p5/1pRp2q1/p2P2p1/P2BP3/QP3PPP/4NRK1 w - - 0 21
After g5!! White is facing serious problems and Black gets control and an attack.
This is just from a glance of the position.

Re: Who else finds g5??
That is correct Terry, yet I am still surprised at how strong it is on a strategic level. It is a hard move for me to find. I doubt I could have found it no matter how much time I had on my clock. There are lot of moves that could have been played here, but on a strategic level I think this move is the best for black in this position. the position almost plays its self once you see the plan for black.
