Here is an excellent report on this year's computer Shogi championship, by the author of Spear, one of the two Western participants.

Highlights: an interesting FPGA-based entrant, an upset of the top programs in the finals, decisive results due to timekeeping bugs, and the first 2-0 victory against top amateurs in the exhibition games.
