Deceiving Adds

Post by fern »

It is a shame how in some stores -that are NOT the one that sponsor this site- they lie about Elo strength. It is also silly, as much people that know what Elo means, is at the same time the first to realize the cheat.
I have seen, in some shops, computer inflated in no less than 400 points to get a sell.
Of course when you see that you decide not to buy even a plastic board from them.
You does not engage in business with such people.
I am talking of Classic Chess Games shop, just in case someone here could fall in the temptation.
They have lot of products, but they cheat lot more.

In truth, no Elo related advertizement can be considered deceitful, since they only pertain to the pool that is tested and the maximum value of the pool can be anything you like.

On the other hand, if they claim a FIDE Elo, then that will be untruthful.

The only thing (for a computer chess rating list) remotely connected to human ratings is the SSDF list because long ago they had humans compete against the machines. Maybe there are other lists like that, but I can't think of any right now.

At any rate, I can claim an Elo of 3000 for the weakest engine on earth and the claim is not a lie. It just so happens that Rybka will have an Elo of 5400 or so on this list.

As far as misleading the general populace -- now this is probably true. But human nature being what it is, I do not think we can blame the software vendors for preying upon the ignorance of the masses. Every company on earth does that (except for a tiny sliver of very unusual ones).

IMO-YMMV.

They talk of USCF and they talk of Fide, not of an ad hoc Elo.
Clearly when someone see elo 2200 -fide or USCF- in a box and then they consult by chance, wikipedia, they are deceived.
When you deceive knowing better, you are a lier.
So they lie.
