Which Engines would you like to see now with added UCI/WB?

Post by swami »

old engines you would most like to see now with added UCI/WB support? Thanks to those voted in the previous poll. It's interesting to see the various votes distribution. I'd like to see more stats on this one.

I know of some old engines which are now currently being developed, revived back with Wb/Uci support, such as Now by Mark Lefler, BugChess by Francois Karr, Colossus by Martin Bryant. I see that Don Dailey is back and discussing in Programming forum after a long time, maybe he is planning to release the engine? It'd be great to have more Original old engines now with added UCI support. It's great to see how they perform on modern hardware, engines at the time play like a typical 2300's on 1 GHZ, If they play on modern hardware, probably their ratings would be anywhere around 2500's.

The undisputed 5 in my opinion:

Chess System Tal

Chess Genius

Virtual Chess

MChess Pro

Socrates

I agree, with the exception that I would prefer Kallisto over Socrates.

In the report about my "Oldies II" shuffle chess tournament, I have some examples from Kallisto 97 Aegon, like

Kallisto played 13.Nf2 and after 13...Qg3(?), 14.Bd2 with a pawn sacrifice and the idea of Bd2-e1, and won against Mephisto Risc.

Thanks for the interesting position Mike and I am glad that we have a 80% agreement here

Hey Swami, it would have been better if you would give a short description of the program with the name of the author and competition history. I guess it's still not too late, may be I am a chess dummy, I do not recognize Cenatur or Check-check. I know that I can do a google search and pretend like I know about them, but that's just not how I roll.

Only 5?
Other: etc. Mirage, Siberian, Ferret. Virtual Chess I little know (1996: very big, small HDD).

Even I don't know much about these engines, Probably Mike Scheidl knows a lot more about it than anyone else I think.

As for Centaur, I think it is a 2300 rated chess program _at the time_ which is equivalent to How you would rate Ruffian in today's scale.

I absolutely know nothing about Check Check other than it played once in 80's or 90's World Mirco Comp chess championship.

There are lot of good ones lke Pioneer, Siberion Chess etc that I couldn't include because of limited poll options, either way I think this list is more than enough for 10 options. I don't include private engines because we have already had private engines poll last week. :)

That's why I like Tony,he's honest....
If Tony was a female and was my girl friend,I would go to work all day long feeling safe because I know that she will never lie on me
