Dr. Summers,
One year ago the Q6600 processor by itself was priced at over $600.00. This is a really good price. Rybka 3 MP should be nice on this machine.
TJ
PS Buy two since the price is so low.
PS2 Don't buy the machine if you are a gamer and want to play Crysis.

Yes Tim,
Comes with 32bit Vista, however upgrading to 64bit is easy thanks to abr

And what better time to remove the junkware in the process than in the beginning...

Re: Can you beat this price?
It all looked good until I reached the VGA card part ... also memory is 667 Mhz .... so with slow memory and onboard VGA it might not be so attractive if you plan to overclock the hell out of it. Most likely this is a G0 CPU so it is a beast inside waiting to be released. Still I recentely ordered a build for a friend which was around $1000 ... and it is running at 3.6 Ghz on air. The system included a 750 watt Thermaltake PS which should be good for many many upgrades ... and a gorgeous 22" Samsung monitor. Also included a gaming Laser mouse and 4 GB of fast DDR 2 PC6400 RAM. I cannot remember a time where you could easily configure a system for $1000 with EVERYTHING included and still beat the best performing system from Intel by a long shot. The top of the line QX9775 CPU alone costs about $1500 ... and a 3.6 Ghz Q6600 will outperform it by quite a bit. Times are very good when it comes to hardware these days. I still remember forking out $6500 for a DX2 66 Mhz with 1 GB HDD .... how times have changed.
Here is a system I would highly recommend for chess... all parts should be available at Newegg.
Gigabyte P35 DQ6 ($110)
Q6600 G0 2.4 Ghz CPU ($190)
Corsair XMS2 PC6400 CAS 4 (2 sets of 2x 1GB for total of 4GB) ($66 !!!)
Thermaltake 750 watts PS ($120)
Thermaltake Max Orb ($45)
Thermaltake M9 Case ($90)
XFX Nvidia 7300 GT PCI Express VGA ($33)
2 x Liteon DVD/RW ($45)
Seagate 500 GB SATA ($85)
Samsung 22" widescreen LCD ($250)
Logitech MXf18 gaming mouse ($40)
Logitech USB Keyboard ($7)

Re: Can you beat this price?
I have been running a Q6600 for about six months with Windows Vista x64. My system started with 4GB, but Vista eats so much memory that I quickly upgraded to 8GB, so the 2GB mentioned for the Dell seems way too little, IMO. Adding memory is quite inexpensive and makes it practical to run 4 engine tests (no pondering) at the same time.
Also, posts at other over clocking sites indicate that Dells rarely come with the preferred G0 stepping Q6600 CPUs. Since it is so easy to OC to 3.2 GHz (33% faster almost for free) this is something to consider, although the stock fan cooler (and maybe power supply) will likely not be adequate.
The option I took was to buy a system on eBay that was already built and configured for over clocking. I paid less than $800 (no monitor). Perhaps I was lucky, but the seller was very responsive and the system has been great.

Re: Can you beat this price?
The problem with Vista 32-bit is that it can't read more than 3 and a little gigabytes so installing more memory only makes sense with a 64-bit version or Windows XP 64-bit, 64bit Linux. The company where I bought a new PC only ships their systems with Vista 32-bit so if I want to use 64 bit software I have to install a new operating system myself. The system came with three partitions so it should be possible to make a dual boot system, I have not yet decided whether I will try that.
I have not really had the chance to test anything yet, space problems also play a role here plus that I already have two of those big PC cases, my Celeron 500 MHz and the Athlon system, all bought from Paradigit over the years, are also still standing here... But I do very much like my new already installed monitor, it may even be the same monitor that Majd Ansari described, it's a Samsung 2253LW, maybe there is already a different model now, it goes very fast in computerland, but I am very satisfied with it. I could even watch some of the Euro 2008 football on my new monitor, I don't have any television signal so that was really a welcome service from the NOS!
I hope the rest of my computer also works, maybe the Celeron 500 now will have to go, I only have one working monitor so three computers is a bit much in a small space.

The Core 2 Duo is not in the system but for technical reasons had to be placed on the quotation, and I got a little more memory also, 4 gigabytes, and three partitions on the harddisk. The graphics card etc. are not really needed for chess but as I wanted an all purpose system it is in, I am not sure if I want to overclock anything now, also because of the warranty, maybe later after a year or so.
Compared to the Dell it was quite a bit more expensive, but if it works, and I don't have to send it back I will be happy with it!
