Arena Beta

Post by Bill Rogers »

I have been testing a couple of engines using the new Arena. One engine is controled by Arena and the other being that it is not xboard compatible is having the moves entered by me. I found that by either using the mouse or entering the cordinates by hand that a great many time Arena would finish the move without me actually indicating where it was to go.
At first I found this very useful but towards the end it cost the program a game by making the wrong move and not letting me correct it.
The king was on g7 and in check the move was suppost to go to h6 but just as soon as I touched the king with the mouse Arena moved it to H8 and it was checkmated immediately.
I'm not sure if this has been reported before but I though everyone should know. I am going to try to reload an old copy of Arena if I can.

Try this:

click Options>Appearance>Chessboard>Move Input

then uncheck

- Allow target square first
- Allow one-click input

Now Wael, I heard this many times and I think it's time for me to ask what stable means exactly. I have been using Arena 1.99b since it was released and I've never encountered any problems apart from the occassional wrong forfeit claims (game ends and clocks still run).

Regards,
I could never get the 1.99 to indicate what opening it was using.
I downloaded the eco file and put it in the Arena file but it still
didn't work.

Best to you

Hi Gabor,
A lot of bugs appeared after this version, but the most annoying major bug for me personally in the later versions is that you can't create personalities from a particular engine, that is to change a particular UCI engine's settings and save it as a new engine ....
For example I have an old personality of Deep Shredder 9.1 called Eccentric which is slightly stronger than the default,I can't create it no more in the newer versions....
Of course the mentioned bug by you is still lives in the Arena 1.1 version too....

I use 1.99b3, with ecocodes9 within Arena folder, and it works fine.

I use Arena 1.1 also. Tried the latest beta, but found bugs.
There was a huge list of bugs listed in the old Arena forum. Perhaps somebody kept a copy?

Don't know if someone kept a copy Graham, but the author must fix the bugs and release a new version 8-)

ChessGUI is well worth trying Wael.
Also accepts engines installed as either WB or UCI plus Matthias is improving it all the time.
Try it. You might be pleasantly surprised.
