Once rybka 3 is released, how will it effect the development of other engines during the following year

It will help other engines make a massive improvement during the comming year

Really depends. You can either be dejected by the sheer strength, or be inspired, knowing how much software improvement there still clearly is to be found and implemented.

I think other developers will start to hire IM & GM strength players as part of their development team. They will also start to take a closer look at ideas and improvements made by FREE OPEN SOURCE projects.

The impact of knowledge based code can not be taken for granted either. We will see more engines like Shredder, Hiarcs, and Fritz make giving their programs more chess knowledge a priority as well.

Look where Bob got Crafty with the on and off help of Grandmasters like Dzindzi. Now imagine if he had Dzindzi's help full time where Crafty might have been.

i think this is a good point. probably half the improvement in rybka three will be due to larry K's work on the evaluation (vas apparently only worked on search)

I think programers will press to improve their programs.

Gerold,

P.S. You left one thing out in the poll. How much will it
help to improve im and gm's play :)

Brave Sir Engine ran away.
Bravely ran away, away!
When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Engine turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Sir Engine!
