Tough test position

Post by M ANSARI »

This position came up in a tourney I have been doing testing Rybka Human

[d]1r6/5B1k/4N2b/8/6R1/5K2/8/8 w - - 0 72

In this position Rybka Human almost immediately played Rg2! and showed an evaluation of over 4 ... test it on your engine. While some engines might play Rg2 ... do they see the forced follow up that leads to a forced resignation in reasonable time?

Re: Tough test position

Okay I'm at work right now so I am using my personal laptop. When I get home I will try it on my quad. My question is why is Rg2 better than Bg6+ ? Note that Rybka 3 Human does not find it within the 5 minute thinking time given on this system. Funny that Delfi Trainer saw both Bg6 and Rg2 but evals Bg6 higher. I wish I had Deep Sjeng to test but that will have to wait till payday friday. I hear Deep Sjeng is very good at endgames.

System is a Core2Duo T5450 @1.66 Ghz with 4GB Ram and 64-bit Vista OS with 5 minute think time for each engine used.

Re: Tough test position

Post by M ANSARI »

Yes it seems that Bg6+! also wins ... funny how some obscure engines find it better than some of the best! Actually I did not test the position for each engine for more than 3 minutes ... I was very impressed how Rybka Human found it within a few seconds. Ofcourse that was on an 8core @ 3.2 ghz Positions like this without pawns usually need some waiting move ... or at least they need some method of trapping a piece while at the same time threatening mate to be able to take the piece. That is where EGTB's are very useful ... and where on many occasions in exactly such positions engines simply cannot find the right moves ... at least not within reasonable time. They will give a very high score due to the extra piece but will fail to get the win. I am curious if Delfi can actually find the win if you let her play against Rybka in that position ... I say that because the evaluation seems quite steady even at 0 depth.

Hardware here is Q6600 at 3.4Ghz

It is not that it finds the move ... it is the jump in score that shows that it is totally winning. Like an evaluation jump from say +.30 to +5.00 or greater.
