The official list of the world's 500 fastest computers, compiled by university and government scientists twice a year, is scheduled to be released next week.
The Department of Energy's Oak Ridge, Tenn., National Laboratory has boosted the computing power of its Cray XT Jaguar supercomputer to more than a quadrillion mathematical calculations per second, surpassing the IBM (NYSE: IBM) Roadrunner, which topped the list of the world's 500 fastest computers in June.
The beefed-up Jaguar has a peak performance of 1.64 petaflops, compared with the Roadrunner's 1.026 petaflops. The Roadrunner is used for nuclear security and scientific research at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
