Playing a long tournament- at 10'+5" time control for 32 bit engines on single processor -the first three chess engines in world -in this moment- are:
1.Rybka 3
2.Naum 4
3.Thinker 5.4A Inert
An impressive result for a free engine ! Maybe the developpers of Fritz,Shredder,Hiarcs ,Deep Sjeng think a bit around the prices. At least a question rests : MONEY FOR WHAT ?
I think in many cases it is OK to charge for an engine. Some of the time and the energy of the programmer does not reward them self but others. Compensation may be a necessity. The programmers that don't charge either enjoy the labor or are just very generous souls or both I think.
What I am grateful for in addition to the engines offered without charge is that this is not just a Computer Chess forum but THE Computer Chess forum at the fore-front of the state of the art and the science of AI (Artificial Intelligence). It's fascinating... the work that is being done here.
But other programmers could still sell their engines, if they update their GUI's, improve playing style. Elo is not the only thing, atleast not until chess nears to getting solved and programmers have run out of ideas.
