Crafty @ ICC

Post by swami »

What hardware is it using? I know it was using 8 cores, but could I get the complete specs into configuration info? It was playing damn well and sometimes even defeated Bright on 4 processors considering the elo difference is about 250-300 elo. It's ICC rating even tremendously jumped in such a short time.

Or could that be the latest beta of Crafty which is really improved or is the hardware replaced?

Well, Crafty is now at 2900's at ICC. Bright was able to win and other times draw in 50 + 3 time control against Crafty at ICC. But Bright loses slightly more at blitz. Crafty has played superb so far, I saw that it was 22.9 version being used there, I wonder what's the full details on hardware, does anybody know it?

I am not positive, but I believe the 2600 version was running on Hyatt's old laptop, and the new version is running on 8 processors on a nice machine. So it is not all software improvements (though some is).

Probably that explains it, Thanks. 8 processors really helped crafty, It just boosted Crafty strength's to 2900 and it's now equivalent to Bright or Glaurung running at 4 cores.

The finger notes say 22.9 on 8 cpus.

It is one node of UAB's cluster. You can see a pic here:

Look at pics 4, 5 and 6.

It varies. Most of the time it is using a dual pentium IV xeon 2.8ghz. On occasion I run it on a dual quad-core xeon, 2.33ghz, 12 gigs of ram...

That really was a splendid hardware, Bob. Especially very useful to Crafty at Blitz :)

But in longer time controls, the hardware tries to help but stronger engines generally outwit Crafty there more times relative to blitz. It's understandable since the higher depths play role here. But lots of games end in draw anyway with few Bright wins.

Yes I think I saw that before, I had actually considered that Crafty could be using this cluster. It was reaching higher depths rather quickly.

Hmm, where did you get the 250-300 elo figure?
I just ran a small blitz tournament: crafty 22.8 scored 26% for -182 elo.
According to ccrl blitz list, bright 0.4a 2cpu is at 2940 elo and crafty 22.4 is at 2774 elo. A difference of ~165 elo.
So, some crafty wins are expected, as long as crafty scores ~30% overall on equal machines.
If crafty has twice the processing power, bright should only be ~100 elo stronger and score around 65% with 35% for crafty.

If crafty consistently does better, check your nps and make sure no other apps are interfering...
