You mean the Travel Companion? It's released as the 314 in Europe and 316 in Eastern Europe and I haven't found any chess programs that run on it. The problem is not the CPU or memory but rather that it runs Windows CE 5.0 and and not Windows Mobile 5 and is therefore missing several necessary components. It's a shame as I wanted a mobile chess computer more than I wanted a SatNav system
Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
I wonder whether the days of IPAQs & Palms is finally over. I mean, you can buy for almost the same price a little netbook which has a lot more computing power and if you take it with Windows XP you have the full list of chess engines you can use.

I guess I am one of the last dinosaurs on this subject. I recently bought a Palm with white/black screen and runs on 2 AAA batteries. First of all, it is weak enough that I actually enjoy playing it, instead of getting hit by a freight train named Hiarcs or Fruit or whatever. I get the feeling of having a chance against it on a Palm. That I do not have on a computer.Thomas Mayer wrote:I wonder whether the days of IPAQs & Palms is finally over. Palm opens instantly; I can play with it while waiting for a bus. It looks impractical with a netbook.
I thought that PDAs would simply die, as smarthphones improve. The market figures show this as well. One advantage that my old Palm has over my phone is the screen size and touch-screen. If I want to combine the two, my choices become paying 500-1500 USD for a touch-screen phone with lot of utilities that I do not need. So I guess, Palm's simplicity will make keep one around for some time.

The PDA's convenience relies in it's size. You can carry a 2700+ chess program in the pocket. No need for laptop carrying bag.
The Sony VAIO P series are getting smaller, but are still bigger than an smarthphone and more expensive.
Probably the trend will be to substitute PDA's only for smartphones with PDA capabilities like the i900 OMNIA.
Curiosly the PXA320 processor was not used in PDA's, and that's a pitty.
PXA320 is a 800 Mhz processor.

Re: IPAQ 310 for chess?
I still prefer the handheld PPC than the small notebooks like the EEPC etc.Probably because I do alot of travelling and I have to have something that fits into my shirt pocket.Quite often I am interupted and need to quickly put it aside and like the idea of being able to resume with a quick push of a switch.
The good thing now is that so many 2nd hand models are now on auction sites at really cheap prices that there is no reason to not to own one.
When HP were producing there latest offerings I thought they would go for the new Mavell PXA320 800 mhz in the top of the line Enterprise model. But as it was they went with the PXA310 624 mhz which in my opinion is not any better than the older Intel PXA270 624 mhz in terms of proceesing speed.
