I'm planning to buy one of these quad so that I could start on my SMP implementation. Which one should I choose?
I have researched about them on the net. I found lots of good articles but I want to know the say of the experts on the computer chess side.

Go for the Q9xxx series, the Q6xxx is already outdated and rather slow....
I am considering the option to buy a Q9775 in the upcoming 2-3 months,I am waiting for the prices to drop rapidly after the releasing of i7 processor which is already in the market....

Thanks Dr. I can't seem to wait for a few months anymore. I will just have to buy a new PC later this year and sell the one I'm going to buy in a few days.

Well, I have nearly an year old Q6600, It's actually moderately best priced and best buy now since even upgraded ones from Q9x series are available on the market. If you are really interested in something else, perhaps you might be willing to buy the Q9x extreme series, I've heard they fare better.Edsel Apostol wrote:Thanks Dr. I can't seem to wait for a few months anymore. Hi Edsel
these two cpus will have nearly the same chess-performance. The Q8200 needs a little less energy than Q6600. Also Q8200 is a 45nm cpu and verry good save overclocking is possible on air cooling.

I totaly agree here and if you skip the Q9xxx series, then go for the Q8200....the overclocking issue is important....Clemens wrote:Hi Edsel

Agree, still Q6600 delivers a lot/most for the moment. But as usual, it all depends on the use, the goal. Surely, if the aim is online competition, overprice for hardware is common for those who don't invest time in making books.swami wrote:Well, I have nearly an year old Q6600, It's actually moderately best priced and best buy now since even upgraded ones from Q9x series are available on the market. For personal test-use, much hardware will do, as long as conditions are identical...

Personally I'd go for the Q6600, but you can't go wrong with either

Hi,
Q6600 is old but still has more overclocking potential !!
(3.3Ghz on good air). FSB 266 and multiplier 9
Q8200 is new but no big overclockign potential (400x7 = 2.8Ghz)
because FSB = 333 and multiplier is only 7.
Best
Johan
my PC:
Q6600@3Ghz with Zalman Cooler running rock stable for more than 1 year now
