How will the World Economic Crisis affect your Computer Chess Life?
Well I guess I know it is bad when Chessbase runs a article about it:
http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=5192
As for me, well lets just say I am glad I bought my toys up front. Anyway here are some of my predictions.
1. My Chess playing time will increase. Chess is a cheap form of entertainment. (Board and Pieces)
2. My Computer Chess Software / Hardware purchases will slow to a crawl.
3. My time on FICS will increase.
4. My reading material will be purchased in E-format.It's normaly cheaper, and has faster delivery. (I am now glad I bought that e-reader!)
That said, I am very thankfull for Open Soucre/ Free Software. To people like Bob Hyatt, Tord Romstad, Martin Blume, and countless others I give a big Thank You!

I think I will buy a Core i7-920 with two 500GB hard disks and 4GB RAM.

Herr Muller,
Why not the 940 Core i7? Get at least 6 GB of RAM. Two 1 TeraByte hard disks would be better. Of course, you are probably a minimalist like me who realizes that in two years the slowest computers will be better than the fastest now.

Ted,
I lost about $80,000.00 Canadian in my Canadian investment accounts last year. If I had that money in US accounts it would have been about $200,000.00 USD since the US market took a more severe beating.
It will not affect my computer chess purchases or my chess playing at all. I also see no changes in my living standard yet.
Tj
PS If you think last year was bad then wait for the rest of this year. If you decide to cut your losses and put your money in one bank or credit union then you might loose it all if that institution fails. Diversify. Have multiple opening, middle and endgame strategies.

Because of the crisis, of course!tjfroh wrote:Why not the 940 Core i7? Get at least 6 GB of RAM. Two 1 TeraByte hard disks would be better.
But seriously, my policy is to not buy computer equipment I do not need yet, and stay away from the very fastest/biggest, as it is usually less cost-efficient. 2 x 500GB HD is enough for my tablebase project for generating 7-men EGTBs. 4GB is enough for generating 6-men in RAM. (Actually even 3GB would be enough for that, so I might settle for that.)
The only thing I am still in doubt about is if I should not wait until Intel comes with an 8-core version of Nehalem.

Re: How will the World Economic Crisis affect your Chess?
Well, from long time ago I like to buy chess books, but my budget is getting low. Also I like reading a lot, so I decided to buy a Sony PRS-505 ebook reader which I expect to redeem in a few months. I will buy electronic chess book in place of paper ones: cheaper and ecologic, only at first is expensive.
I will post in my blog a review of this device in the following days. It is a great device and if you like reading you will find lot of free ebooks. Nice for this crisis times.

I am sure you will enjoy that Sony e-reader. I have the Amazon Kindle and I love it.Kempelen wrote:Well, from long time ago I like to buy chess books, but my budget is getting low. Interestingly, I also bought the PRS-505 ebook reader recently. I do like it a lot. http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/ has good software that works with the ereader. This is especially useful if you are not running windows.Kempelen wrote:Well, from long time ago I like to buy chess books, but my budget is getting low. Are there good chess books available for the ereader? I think most of the electronic chess books I have heard about are chessbase files and not ereader compatible.
Looking forward to the review of the ereader and also curious about the best places to find free ebooks of good quality.

Well, I'm less affected than many folks are. I'm not getting my house foreclosed or anything like that. And I still have some leisure time for chess and other stuff. But I'm about to go back to full-time work after being semi-retired, so I will have less of that time.
