I don't allow book moves to be selected that lead to a repetition - if such a move is pulled from the book I force a search instead, to see if the repetition is actually good or not (on the chess servers that calculation takes into account the opponent's rating as well as the score).

I also try to remove book lines that allow the opponent to force a draw.

Guilty of a draw?! I'd call that 'lucky' instead.

I hope Symbolic was playing with the cognitronic searcher as this would be a great self-esteem builder for it. ;)

Symbolic has had this behavior for quite a while. I pointed this out after last year's WCRCC tournament: http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22100

I fixed it in ZCT though ;)

And it was a repeated game as well

A check of Symbolic's last year of play shows that the game itself was a repeat. The original, also against Crafty, was played at Tue Apr 29 07:43:53 2008.

Perhaps, but if so then can I blame each loss to bad luck?

I should note that Symbolic has no "contempt factor" code and always "plays the board and not the man". I realize that Symbolic would likely score more points if I added a contempt factor, but I think this would add complications when trying to analyze program performance.

The only thing I call "Lucky" is my big bellied, ten kilogram shelter cat who is getting larger with every meal. He eats much less than my other shelter boy Spooky but somehow manages to have twice Spooky's mass.

Haven't see a status report in awhile. Is development still active?

Lucky's development seems to be concentrated on his girth. Spooky continues developing more ways of making trouble. The Chess In Lisp Toolkit hasn't seen much development over the past several months, but I hope to resume its work soon.

Hmmm. Perhaps Lucky needs a new ball of string.
