Chainsaw Massacre Tourn.- VERY IMPORTANT

Post by geots »

You can look back a page or 2 and with no problems find the entrants and many of the rounds i have posted here in this tournament. I generally post 6 to 12 rounds per week. I have left you with a link to download the PGNs, and i have posted 4 threads with 5 rounds each, with the link of course to the PGNs. NOT ONE comment has been made here concerning this tournament, and in CCRL Public, NOT ONE set of PGNs has been downloaded. Which tells me there is no interest in this tournament at all. Putting the results here was i thought a benefit to some of you, and i also run the tournament, which i will not stop, to get these engines more games for CCRL. But i will NO LONGER enter any of these results here. I mean, you dont have to hit me square in the face with a 2x4 to let me know you are not interested. The rounds will not be entered in CCRL Public either. It takes a bit of time- and i have seen it is an utter waste of time.

Best,

The number of views seems to indicate that many are interested.
I'd say that most people who view results in this subforum rarely post comments. It's usually a small core group who do as a general rule.
As long as you're having fun, that's the main thing.

Cheers, Graham.

Hi George,

if nobody has attacked you for posting about your tournaments, that is a sign that most people appreciate your efforts.
People appreciate every CCRL game, so keep posting.

Concerning my free ChessGUI, I have been heavily attacked by some people whose needs the GUI does not meet. One guy told me I had wasted 4 hours of his precious time (by making my GUI available) and he deleted ChessGUI from his computer.

Yet I keep updating public ChessGUI as a means of fighting back  .

Regards,
Matthias.

My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

I think you mistake our laziness for lack of interest. Quite the contrary. I (for instance) am interested in every single chess tournament put on by every single contest holder. That does not mean that I will download the files right away (though I will probably get them eventually -- but maybe not until they get folded into a greater pile).

Consider, for instance, this quote on Sedat's site:
"Who is interested in SCCT Hardware Tournament, please feel free to contact me !"

Now, I am intensely interested in his tournament. And yet I have not contacted him. Do you know why? You guessed it -- I'm lazy.
Besides, he might ask me to *do* something. I have a very bad habit of only doing the things I want to do and so I might have to show a bit of bad form in saying, 'Not right now...'

So, never confuse lack of contact with lack of interest. But do recognize that the great masses of us are just a bunch of hungry maggots -- far too lazy to actually kill the cow, but hovering around in case it dies or someone kills it for us so that we can eat it. Those of you who kill the cow for us -- we *are* grateful. But with our mouths stuffed with rotting cow intestine -- it's hard for us to say 'thank you' without missing our eating stride.

Others have already put it quite eloquently, and I too appreciate your efforts (as well as the efforts of all other tournament managers), and hope the lack of immediate feedback does not discourage you (or them) from running tournaments. I only find myself active with chess programming "in waves", due to life's many distractions. But I always enjoy keeping an eye on ongoing tournaments, albeit from the bottom of the rating lists.... :-) So please continue despite our silence!
