Ivanchuk-Anand, Linares 2009

Post by jdart »

Apparently there were a couple of points in this recent game where Ivanchuk missed a win. See http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1536017

One position is here:

[d] 5rk1/R5p1/4p3/4P1p1/P2P2P1/1r6/7P/4R1K1 w - -

bm d5. This looks very difficult. Rybka 3 likes 36. Rf1 initially and scores d5 as second best, at least through depth 16. I have not actually verified that d5 is a lot better but if I force that move I start to see higher scores for White from the resulting position.

The other position is here:

[d] 8/6pk/P3R3/6p1/4K1P1/7r/8/8 w - -

where Ivanchuk played 47. Kd5 but apparently the right move is Kd4. This is also quite hard. Rybka 3 likes Kd5 initially but does switch to Kd4 eventually.

Ivanchuk is a great player - too bad he missed these opportunities, but it is no shame to not find them over the board.

Jon, it seems some programs do not have any trouble with these two 2700+ GM positions. Thanks for posting these.

In the first position, Naum 4 likes 1.d5 as best at D=16 and gives modest +1.50.I am no GM and can't decide if it is the absolute best.Also Pocket Shredder jumps into 1.d5 right at the start and gives +2.37 but is based on the variation 1.d5 exd5?! 2.e6 d4 3.Rd7 d3 4.a5 Re8 5.a6 Ra3 6.a7 Kh7 7.e7.PF3 with Hiarcs 12.1 also finds 1.d5 at D=14 +1.48 with 1.d5 Rb2 2.Rf1 exd5 3.a5 d4 4.e6 Re8 5.e7 Re2 6.Rd1 Re4 7.h3.

It's position 2 that get's my attention as that is critical if you want to win.

Ivanchuk obviously grew weary at this point otherwise he would have spotted Kd4!! followed by Kc5! winning this basic Rook and Pawns ending.

He could have just overlooked it OTB but probably fatigue was to blame.

In the first position, Rybka appears to be aiming for a transposition of d5, intending to play it subsequently. Perhaps his real error here was his follow-up, or perhaps Rybka failed to properly consider the response Rd3. As for the second move, it does not show up until ply 24. Hard to fault someone for not seeing a full 13 moves ahead without error.

A little bit later, after Anand 48... g6 there was still a win for white:

[d] 8/7k/PR4p1/3K2p1/6P1/2r5/8/8 w - -

49.Rc6!

Last possible chance is here:
R7/K5k1/P5p1/6p1/1r4P1/8/8/8 w - - acd 31; acn 181274073; acs 717; bm Rc8; ce 235; pv Rc8 Kh6 Rh8+ Kg7 Re8 Kh6 Rh8+ Kg7 Re8 Kh6 Rh8+ Kg7 Re8 Kh6 Rh8+ Kg7 Re8 Kh6 Rh8+ Kg7 Re8 Kh6 Rh8+ Kg7

Move actually played was Rb8 {which leads directly to a draw} instead of Rc8 {which may still have winning chances}.

I don´t know how white can win after: 1. d5 Rb2 2. Rf1 Rc8.
I think this position it´s a draw.

I ran both on Crafty. The first it likes d5 by the 1/2 second mark and never changes... score +2.x The second took 5 minutes to switch to Kd4. It generally liked Kd5 until it later switched to Kf5 before finally going to Kd4...score was +4 at last output.
