Counter 1.1 and the Microsoft .NET framework - help please!

Post by redmecca »

Hello;

Please can you help me with getting Counter 1.1 to work?
Which of downloads do I need to install on this page?

http://www.microsoft.com/net/Download.aspx

Is it the top one - v3.5 SP1 - or do I need to install one of the "redistributable packages" at the bottom of the page?

Will I notice any difference to the running of my PC once I install the .NET framework, or will it just kick-in when I run Counter?

Thanks for your help.

So is it the top link on the page v3.5 SP1 that I use?

......or the bottom one (the redistributable package)?

Please note that you are asked to install 500 Mb of extra software just to run a single chess engine. What does it need .Net for, probably another variant of the Majura Chess Board interface that you also got with older-?- Deep Sjeng versions? I would not install so much software just for one mediocre free interface, sorry Darren and Counter programmer. If the Counter engine is a Winboard engine or UCI it should not need .Net to run. So I suspect it is for the interface? For the free demo of Deep Sjeng 2.5 I did not have to install .Net because it was already installed for Paint.NET which you guessed it already is an application making more sense with .Net than a chess engine.

I think the top link is the link you should use. But please make sure there is enough space on your harddisk for it!

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

If the engine is written in a .Net language it needs the environment, no matter if grafics or winboard or else.

While I agree that one would probably not want to install the package for some less important application alone, there is no doubt that there are many useful programs written for the .Net environment, so on a modern windows to have it is more or less a must. (imho)

kind regards

Several WB/UCI engines without interface need .NET !

Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.
