Crafty 21.06 is the last reliable engine for analysis on Fritz.

Crafty 21.06 delivers the best move for the 43 black move on this game: 43...Dxc5, while Crafty 23.00 delivers: 43...Dd1, clearly not the best move.

Your conclusion makes absolutely no sense to me. 23.0 will thump 21.6 in any kind of match you choose to play, either head-to-head or against a common group of opponents. It is roughly 100 Elo stronger.

This position simply means that 23.0 likes white better, and therefore it goes for the repetition Qd1. That's all it means. 23.0 thinks this is +2.0 for white if black plays Qxc5... So it _should_ go for the rep based on that, which was a 21 ply search by the way:

Code: Select all

I think it is not a matter of playing strength, but a programming issue.

For example, ShredderClassic3 and SOS 5 for Arena does not have this problem.

You cannot make a decision from a single move.
Consider:

Here is crafty 20.0, compiled with DETECT_DRAW enabled, analyzing that position:

Black(1):

Solves the problem in about one second using a single CPU.
However, the latest crafty versions will trounce this crafty version in a match.

I keep this crafty version handy because it is great for analyzing extremely closed positions (in fact it is the best engine I know for that). But on other positions it will not do as well.

Every engine has strengths and weaknesses. I would go as far as to say that every engine of significant size also has some bugs in it. So you need a giant pile of data to make decisions about what engines are good for. But all of them are good for something. You just have to find out what it is.

How long did you give them to search and how deep did they go? Post the analysis from them if you have it, particularly after you play Qxc5...

The problem is that after 43...Dd1, white have a better move not getting into a repetition (because it is still not a 3 move repetition..so white can play other move for avoid repetition...):

However, between two computers, this is moot. Otherwise white would have never played into the _first_ position. Computers generally treat 2-fold and 3-fold repetitions the same in their search, for reasons of efficiency. Why waste the time to allow a 2-fold repetition in your search, and then avoid the 3rd???

(Remember that the problem only arouse when you read the move from the pgn. -I use Fritz 10 interface-)
I don't follow. Both say white is winning, black is losing. So what is the point about wanting black to play Qxc5 if it is losing, when black can repeat the position for the second time by playing Qd1?

The problem won't happen from a FEN position, because FEN doesn't have game history and the repetition will not be seen. Reading from the PGN, you get all old positions as well, so that the repetition is seen.

What happens is that after black 43...Dd1, white gets an even greater advantage that after 43... Qxc5, so 43...Dd1 is an even more loosing move for black (black loses faster).
After black 43...Dd1, black do not get a Draw, it only loses faster.
